About the Portfolio
Doris Muriathiri
I am currently a graduate student in Richard M. Fairbanks IU School of Public Health. My concentration has changed from Epidemiology to Health Policy and Management. I am still contemplating doing a dual in Social and Behavioral Science, yet to decide. I am a mother of an 11 year old daughter and an 8 year old son. I juggle between work, college and the kids and I come last. It is very easy to neglect yourself when you have alot going on. I have changed my concentration because Epidemiology courses like Biostatistics need alot of time.
My Interest in type II diabetes
I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with my 2 children (different times). Experts including my doctor say that women who had gestational diabetes are likely to develop type II diabetes. Also, I have indirectly cared for diabetic prisoners and patients. I am also aware of the complications due to the disease and I would like to make others aware of the same. I targeted African Americans because they are at the highest risk followed by Hispanics among the minorities.
My uncle's kidneys recently failed because he failed to self-manage his blood glucose as directed by his doctor. He ended up spending alot of money to save his life and he is now on dialysis..
